There are multiple reports that Texas Tech will retain head football coach Matt Wells and that offensive coordinator David Yost has been relieved of his duties. In an official release, Wells said the following about Yost:
“Coach Yost cares deeply about this program, our players and is a true professional,” Wells said. “This is a difficult decision, but I recognize that I have a responsibility to our players, to our fans and to our administration to do what is best for our program as we move forward. Sometimes change is necessary, and I feel like this is one of those times.”
I have a ton of thoughts running in my head, namely that I suppose I’m glad that Art Briles isn’t getting hired, but also disappointed that Texas Tech didn’t make a more significant change. Maybe that’s the definition of sad-happy. I have always understood that there are prominent boosters wanted Briles as the head coach, but that Hocutt wouldn’t budge on the idea of hiring Briles, basically the idea was that if Briles was hired, these boosters would give a significant amount of money. No Briles = no money. In a cash-strapped COVID-19 year, I don’t know if there was a budget for a buy-out of a current head coach and assistants and then hiring a new head coach that was not funded by boosters.
I can’t say that I know all of the logistics of all of the moving parts and you certainly have a right to complain, but I’m not exactly sure how the sausage gets made because 2020 is weird.
Also of note is that inside receiver KeSean Carter is transferring. One of the toughest receivers I’ve seen play and grew a ton while he was at Texas Tech.
