Starting 5
1. Stats. Well, another not so great team? At least Grambling is decent defensively in some respects. They are pretty terrible offensively, so the defense is the key here, so maybe that’s good. Hopefully that will give Texas Tech something to work on offensively. Grambling does a good job of only allowing teams to shoot eFG% of 45.3%, which is good for 78th in the nation.
2. Scouting. Grambling is not a good shooting team by any stretch. They are terrible three-point shooting and they aren’t a good rebounding team on the offensive end. Surprisingly, they do take care of the ball, so Texas Tech won’t really be able to rely on a huge turnover game from the Tigers. And they really just had one game where they were good defensively and other than that, they were just okay.
3. How They Match Up. Thomas is maybe their best player. A very high block rate and an effective field goal shooter, plus a good offensive rating. Woodall off the bench is also good and an effective shooter as well. He’s not going to shoot from the three-point area, but he’s been good inside the arc. Randolph and Christon are also good shooters, they just don’t take a ton of shots.
4. Reading Material. Avalanche Journal’s Carlos Silva, Jr. – Georgetown transfer McClung becoming go-to playmaker for No. 17 Red Raiders:
“I think above all, Mac’s trying man, and he’s bought in,” Texas Tech coach Chris Beard said Friday when asked of what’s allowed McClung to be an offensive spark. “He didn’t come down here thinking he had all the answers. Just like I don’t wake up every day thinking I have all the answers.
“Everything we do around here makes sense. And everything Mac does, makes sense. He’s an aggressive player and we want him to be aggressive. Keenan Evans was pretty aggressive around here. It’s how you win. But, he’s trying to take that step to become a pro with efficiency. And I think he’s doing great.”
5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:
Offensively, Texas Tech is averaging 79.5 points and shooting 50.2 percent from the field while the stifling defense has shut down opponents to only 55.0 ppg. and 33.8 percent shooting. The Red Raiders limited Troy to 34.0 percent shooting from the field and 2-for-20 on 3-pointers to improve to 3-1 on the season. Tech forced 22 Trojan turnovers and had a 31-4 scoring advantage on points from turnovers.
Grambling is led by Cameron Woodall who travels to Lubbock averaging 12.0 points per game, while Cameron Christon is scoring 11.0 ppg. and Trevell Cunningham has 19 assists through three games on their schedule. The Tigers went 17-15 overall and were 11-7 in SWAC play last season.
