Naked and Afraid. Dogsledder and adventure person Blair Braverman went on the show “Naked and Afraid” and she told her story on OutsideOnline and it’s a terrific read:
My second night at the hotel, the night before my entry into the wilderness—“insertion,” in Naked and Afraid lingo—a naturalist came to give me a private hourlong talk on the local environment, the only instruction I would receive. He was a slim, soft-spoken man named Mark, and we sat together at the hotel’s deserted bar. I took notes and recorded him. I’ve never concentrated so hard in my life.
I’d be in a place called Mapungubwe, Mark explained, across the Limpopo River from Botswana, near the Tuli Wilderness area. The region was known as the Elephant Triangle; in the past few days, up to 70 elephants had been seen together at once. He told me to give elephants space and to be especially cautious around mothers and bulls looking to mate. “Sometimes people get circled by them,” he said mildly, “and that’s quite dangerous.” He knew of several females whose trunks had been severed by snares, and they were also likely to be aggressive. I should freeze around elephants, he told me, unless they charged. Then I should run.
Watch Stadium’s Jeff Goodman has his preseason Top 25 and has Texas Tech at #7:
7. Texas Tech – Chris Beard will lose grad transfers Chris Clarke and T.J. Holyfield for sure, and there’s a chance both Davide Moretti and Jahmi’us Ramsey both decide to go pro. The Red Raiders return Terrence Shannon Jr., Kyler Edwards, Kevin McCullar, get UNLV transfer Joel Ntambwe eligible and bring in a pair of studs in McDonald’s All-American Nimari Burnett and Micah Peavy.
Via Big 12 Sports, Brittany Brewer was named as one of the “Final Five” finalists for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Starting Five Awards:
Brewer, who is a finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award, finished her senior season as the only player in the country averaging 15+ points, 10+ rebounds and 4+ blocks, and was second nationally and first among autonomy conference players in blocks per game with a 4.4 average. The All-Big 12 First Team performer tallied 15 double-doubles on the season, and averaged 16.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game—ranking top six in the Big 12 in both.
Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan Feigen has his list of players that scouts wanted to see play in the NCAA Tournament, one of those players is Jahmi’us Ramsey:
Just 19 years old, Ramsey missed time as a freshman with a hamstring injury and had been inconsistent. Scouts wanted to see more in the conference tournament and potentially beyond.
I’m not real concerned about Feigen’s thoughts, but at the top of the article is a header that says “Texas Sports Nation” and I’ve never heard of that before. The “About” tab says that it is your Houston sports hub. I’m learning all sorts of things nowadays.
We will take any sports content at this point. RedRaiderSports’ Ben Golan talked to pitcher Johnny Rice of Central Arizona C.C. who committed to Texas Tech and Tim Tadlock.
MaxPreps has their Texas All-State team and Micah Peavy is named to the firs team:
Top 50 senior prospect averaged 17.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game to lead the Panthers to the UIL Class 6A state semifinals.
Really like how Peavy does it all, score, rebound, pass, and play defense.
