Football Notebook: Roster Moves and Quarterback Competition

There are some moves. Spring football is right around the corner, starting tomorrow in fact. With that, Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams has the latest on some transactional moves that are happening this spring.

  • Up first is that linebacker/safety hybrid Evan Rambo has retired for medical reasons, namely another knee injury that plagued him while at Cal.
  • Adrian Frey is moving back to cornerback from safety, where he played all of 2018 and did quite well, while the move to safety wasn’t quite as good. Also at cornerback are Zech McPheaarson, DaMarcus Fields, Alex Hogan, John Davis, and Dequanteous Watts.
  • Inside receiver/quarterback Xavier Martin will move to safety, probably because that is the one position that needs a significant upgrade so it appears that Wells is trying to place players there that are good athletes and Martin has always been that. Also at safety are Thomas Leggett, Ja’Marcus Ingram, Adam Beck, and Dadrion Taylor.
  • Don’t forget that new secondary coach Derek Jones is going to utilize the spur a bit differently, so rather than utilizing a player like Rambo (a safety/linebacker type of player), he wants a cornerback at that Spur position, and Fields will get the first shot there.

Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams also has quotes from head coach Matt Wells about the quarterback competition, namely that redshirt sophomore Alan Bowman and redshirt freshman Maverick McIvor are going to get 90-95% of the snaps at quarterback this spring:

“But those two guys will take 90, 95 percent of every rep this spring, and they need it. They need it in this offense. They need it in terms of all the passing-game reads. They need it in terms of experience, and not only experience in playing, but experience in this offense.

“They both missed significant time, and so it’ll be a fun competition. Obviously something we watch and evaluate every single day. And I’ll get asked about it every single day.”

Wells is also asked Jett Duffey could potentially return and his quote was, “I don’t think so.”

Do not be surprised if McIvor makes a move here.
