Starting 5

1. Stats. Southern Miss is a not very good team overall, it’s easy to say that they struggle. they have a high turnover rate offensively and they do not get to the line really at all offensively, which means that they are a jump shooting team that doesn’t shoot very well, 222nd in the nation in eFG%. Defensively, they simply don’t stop teams from shooting the ball very well and they also send opposing teams to the line quite often. In fact, in terms of offensive free throw rate (how many times you go to the free throw line), the Golden Eagles are 352nd and in defensive free throw rate (how many times you send your opponent to the free throw line) they are 327th.

2. Scouting. There are some interesting opponents and the Golden Eagles have played a decent schedule. They lost to Iowa State by 28 points, 73-45 in their 4th game of the year. They have also played Gonzaga, Seton Hall, and Alabama and they’ve lost badly. Very badly. Southern Miss’ best player is a guy named Artur Knontsuk (6-7/215), but he didn’t play the last game. At all. And that’s how I base my starting lineups. His last game was against North Florida and he only played 6 minutes. Before that, he was pretty good, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and shooting the ball at a rate of 46.5%. So if he plays, don’t be surprised if he’s the best player. And I think that not having Knontsuk has created a bit of an issue for the starting lineup, it’s pretty small overall. In terms of players that can affect things either offensively or defensively, well, there’s really no one that’s receiving significant minutes that does very much except for a guy named Boban Jacdonmi (6-9/256), but he’s also been out recently and before being out, he was averaging 12.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and shooting the ball at a rate of 61.4%.

3. How They Match Up. As previously mentioned, Southern Miss is a small team without two of their post-players playing and Texas Tech fans know how not having your best players can affect your overall play. I know there’s this “respect ever opponent” and that’s true to an extent, but there’s not a lot to be concerned with if Knontsuk and Jacdonmi don’t play. In fact, based on advanced stats, Texas Tech is expected to win by 19 or so.

4. Reading Material. Avalanche-Journal’s Carlos Silva, Jr. – Red Raiders return home following win over No. 1 Louisville, host Southern Miss:

While it was monumental win for the program, marking the first time the Red Raiders downed the No. 1 team in the country, Shannon was more pleased to know his squad continued to stay even-keeled and stayed the course en route to claiming the triumph over the Cardinals.

“Coach (Chris Beard), every time we lost, kept saying to not change. He just told us to keep it real,” Shannon said after the win over Louisville on Dec. 10. “He also told us to buck up and face our fears. And we showed that tonight.”

Now, the challenge is to add on to the positive roll as Texas Tech welcomes Southern Miss for a 6 p.m. Monday matchup at United Supermarkets Arena. The contest is scheduled to be televised on ESPN2.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

Texas Tech will begin a five-game home stand when it hosts Southern Mississippi at 6 p.m. on Monday at the United Supermarkets Arena where it has won 11 straight dating back to last season.

The Red Raiders (6-3) are coming off knocking off No. 1-ranked Louisville at Madison Square Garden in New York and comes into the game against the Golden Eagles (3-7) on a 51-game non-conference home winning streak. Southern Miss (Conference USA) will host North Florida at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi before traveling to Lubbock to play the Red Raiders for the third time in the series history. Tech, which has played its last four games on the road and without leading scorer Jahmi’us Ramsey due to injury in the last three games, is 2-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles with the last meeting coming with Tech earning a 96-79 win back on Nov. 22, 1996.
