I Slept for 8 Hours and 47 Minutes. On Saturday night, I fell asleep on the couch around 8:00 p.m., I woke up at 11:34 p.m. and made my way to the bed where I slept until 4:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. By the end of the football season, I’m usually exhausted, literally exhausted, and Saturday night was the culmination of being tired for 3 or 4 months. I think the other part of this was that I ran for 2 hours on Saturday morning, worked outside most of the day, mulching leaves with the lawnmower, putting up outdoor decorations, and just not stopping until we got Whataburger for dinner, which probably helped in me completely passing out. The passing out part is probably my body telling me that I needed to get some sleep and I could mentally check out for a bit longer than I normally allow myself to do so.

And today, we have a nice surprise, which is that we’re doing our not-so-annual Staking The Plains Gift Guide. I’m posting at 10:00 a.m. and we should have new gift guides a good part of the day.

So, despite your sports teams maybe not winning in the manner that you want, today should be a really fun day and I hope you stick around and come back often.

Leaving Las Vegas . . . 0-2. Well, things could have turned out better this past week. Chris Beard and Co. lost a close game to Iowa (the score wasn’t as close as the game felt) and then lost to Creighton in overtime. There are some things that need to be figured out and of course, maybe, just maybe, expectations might need to change. Who knows, it’s a long season and I can pretty much guarantee that Beard and his staff will work tirelessly to remedy whatever ails the team. Still, it is difficult to replace as much talent from last year without some rocky points. Oh, and 8 top 20 teams lost to unranked teams this week, Duke, Michigan State, UNC, Gonzaga, Utah State, Tennessee, VCU, and of course Texas Tech (who actually lost twice to two unranked teams).

Harrell to Longhorns? Well, Tom Herman fires their defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and offensive coordinator Tim Beck has been reassigned (or something). There are already rumors out there that Texas would like to money-whip anyone and everyone to come to Austin and that includes USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell. And of course, Orlando was the defensive coordinator for Matt Wells at Utah State for a couple of years and are good friends. I think there was video of Orlando and Wells hugging it out before the game. Back to Harrell, if he did make this move, it would hurt pretty bad, but it’s a job and he’d get paid an insane amount of money to call plays for the Longhorns. It’s just a job and Kingsbury did it for TAMU and if Harrell is offered a ton of money to do it in Austin, I won’t begrudge him. The spotlight will be intense, but that wasn’t a problem at USC.

Head Coaches Fired. Boston College fired Steve Addizio, Ole Miss fired Matt Luke, South Florida fired Charlie Strong, Missouri fired Barry Odom, and the list will probably just grow from there. I think there are some players for Missouri that are Texas kids, Robert Wooten is a defensive end from the greater-Houston area, that I think was offered by Texas Tech. So there are certainly some players to keep an eye on for sure.
