Leading Off

Running Behind. Well, I’m not normally this late with my posts, but here we are. Youssouf has basketball and soccer practice on Monday nights and we don’t get home until after 9 and I’m beat by the time we get home. I’ve got as much there as I’ve had time to type. Win the day.

Practice.

Beard Ready for Foreign Tour. A-J Media’s Carlos Silva, Jr. was there for yesterday’s press conference with head coach Chris Beard, who was discussing the upcoming foreign tour to the Bahamas coming up August 12th through the 19th.

“More important than the trip, the games or the experience are the practices,” Beard said. “So we get 10 full practices this summer. … I consider it kind of the first break that this has got. We’re fortunate. We did nothing to earn that. It just happened to be the year that we got it.

“We intend to take full advantage of the opportunity, especially with this young team — seven freshmen. These practices this summer are precious to us and we’re taking advantage of them.”

Beard also updated the media on the status of DeShawn Corprew, which is that he can’t really comment on what happened, but that he turned it over the people in charge of Title IX allegations, and Beard said that he’s being supportive of DeShawn, good or bad.

In roster news, Beard said that he is seeking a waiver for forward Joel Ntambwe (6-9/210), who averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds a game as a true freshman at UNLV:

“We are in the process of trying to help him through an appeal so he can play immediately,” Beard said. “I think he’s gotta a real strong, valid case as to why. It’s not my place (Monday) in this setting to say what his waiver is based on. … If he does play, he’ll be one of our guys that we depend on; he’ll be in the mix. If he doesn’t play, we have a plan that we talked about from Day 1 with Joel. That plan is to eventually turn him into a pro.”
