Leading Off
The Weekend is Here. Well, it’s almost here. On tap for today, you’ll have LaBarre with a basketball post coming up at 10:00 a.m., then the opening day preview and series thread with Oregon goes up at noon with first pitch at 2:00 p.m. Should be a fun afternoon with the wind absolutely howling today. I hope you all have a great weekend.
R.I.P. Lawrence Williams. Via A-J Media’s Don Williams, former Red Raider footballer Lawrence Williams passed away this week at the age of 65.
Wide receiver Lawrence Williams played the starring role, catching three touchdown passes and, memorably in Tech lore, waving twice to a beaten Longhorns defender as he sprinted away for a 77-yard TD.
Williams died this week in his hometown of Wichita Falls. He was 65. Williams’ sister, Wanda Mergerson, said he was found Sunday at his home.
Listed at 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds during his playing days, Williams was second-team all-Southwest Conference in 1973 for Tech’s 11-1 Gator Bowl champions and first-team all-SWC as a senior in 1974, when he led the conference in touchdown catches.

DallasNews’ Chuck Carlton with a look at the recruiting event at Dallas Country Club on Wednesday evening:
Kirby Hocutt knows exactly what he wants from new Texas Tech football coach Matt Wells.
He’s seen it.
During the second quarter of Utah State’s 52-13 demolition of North Texas in the New Mexico Bowl two months ago, the Tech athletic director called his new hire, raving about the team that Wells just left.
“I want some of that … that physicality,” a pumped-up Hocutt told Wells on the phone.
