Surprise, we’re doing the running backs AND the quarterbacks today. Felt like the amount of content wasn’t enough for two separate posts.

The Running Backs
This group most definitely needs some more bodies, just 4 running backs and 3 scholarship running backs doesn’t seem like enough. And I know that this is a bit negative, but given Da’Leon Ward’s history of availability, I’m really pretty concerned.

I’d maybe even be a bit disappointed if Texas Tech didn’t add at least two running backs to the 2019 class, I think a JUCO running back would be beneficial as well. OC David Yost seems to like smaller and quicker guys, guys that can play the slot or out of the backfield, he doesn’t seem to care. In fact, I think he recruited a JUCO receiver and moved him to running back last year, so catching the ball out of the backfield is paramount and being shifty in space is important. I think there will be a place for Thompson, for sure, but Yost played two running backs last year, kinda 50/50 and they definitely fit the mold of Henry. And I think that with Henry fitting the bill of what Yost tends to look for, I’d definitely draft him in your fantasy keeper league.

The Quarterbacks
The big offseason transfer news was that Levelland walk-on quarterback Nick Gerber transferred to West Texas A&M in search of more playing time. Good for him and I hope he gets a ton of snaps.

From a numbers standpoint, I don’t know that this would ever really be any better. You’ve got a mix of older and more experienced players. You actually have scholarship quarterbacks on campus and they’re not all transferring away and you’ve got a really talented freshman quarterback signed in McIvor.
But maybe more than any of that is that Xavier Martin was seen in a tweet yesterday working out with the quarterbacks. There have been rumors, but nothing official and Martin’s move back to quarterback about as official as we’ll get I think. And if you’re a bit lost, Martin was originally a quarterback coming out of high school and was pretty much immediately moved to receiver when he arrived. I’m interested to see how he does for sure.
I think we all know that this is most likely Bowman’s job to lose and I’d still love to see Carter and Duffey push him (and maybe even Martin). Like a lot of you, I think that Bowman wins this job pretty easily and I could envision a situation where you might see the scholarship quarterbacks transfer, but that is kind of the reality with quarterbacks at this point in college football history and Texas Tech fans know more than most about quarterbacks transferring.
