Five Questions

1. Is Baylor any good?

I dunno? Is Texas Tech any good? Same record, 5-6 overall and 3-5 in conference. Baylor has conference wins against Kansas, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State, While you can substitute TCU for Kansas State and that’s your Texas Tech record. And I suppose you could debate who is the better team this year between TCU and Kansas State, but you get the idea. You sort of are who you are at this point.

2. Who are the bright spots on offense?

When Charlie Brewer plays, he’s very good. And I don’t mean that in a negative way, I think Brewer has missed some time with an injury, but he’s played in 11 games this year, averages about 211 yards a game, 6.1 yards per attempt, 60% completion rate and 14 touchdowns to 7 interceptions. Brewer is also your leading rusher and I’m sure that’s not the plan, but Brewer has 438 yards, averages 5.4 yards a carry and has 5 touchdowns. JaMycal Hasty is the second leading rusher and only has 376 yards a game and would have guessed that he’d be better, but I’m guessing that a lot of that is on the line. Former running back Jalen Hurd (6-4/217) is your big receiver or tight end and he’s the leading catcher with 66 receptions and 905 yards with 4 touchdowns. Denzel Mims (6-3/208) can be a dominant receiver, but only has 44 receptions for 634 yards and 6 touchdowns.

3. Are the Bears any good on Defense?

Not really (always feel like that I need to state that statistically Texas Tech isn’t good at defense either) and the Bears are 94th in defensive S&P+. Linebacker Clay Johnston is most likely the best defensive player, has 69 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss and 6.5 run stuffs. Defensive tackle James Lynch (6-4/285) is probably the team’s most disruptive defensive player 28.5 tackles, 9 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, and 9.5 run stuffs.

4. How’s the Matt Rhule experiment going?

Well, Baylor was 1-11 last year, 1-8 in conference, and this year, they’ve matched Texas Tech’s record so that probably tells you all you need to know about Baylor and Texas Tech. Two of their wins were against Abilene Christian and UTSA.

5. Can we talk about series records (last time this year!)?

It’s Texas Tech 38, Baylor 37 for the all-time series. Texas Tech’s longest win streak was 1996 through 2010 and Baylor’s is 11 from 1947 through 1960. Most recently, Baylor won 5 in a row from 2011 through 2015 and Texas Tech has won the past two games. There was 1 tie in 1930, 7-7.
