All of the news that’s fit to print is in the No Huddle post from this morning. Don’t ever say that there’s not enough content (except when there is not enough content).

Five Questions

1. What can you tell me about Lamar’s football team?

I do not like all of the difficult questions to start off with and do not appreciate your tone. I’ll tell you what I know, which is that Lamar returns 19 starters, which is great because they were pretty bad last year. Mike Schultz is in his second year as head coach. Lamar played Kentucky Christian last week and won 70-7. I also know that if you go to a Lamar home game their menu includes Chick-Fil-A, Jalapeno Bacon Slider poppers, crawfish stack and they also have a taco food truck at the tailgate area. ****ALERT**** If you live near Beaumont, maybe go to a Lamar football game!

2. Now that you’ve gotten the silly stuff out of the way, what do you know about the Cardinals offense?

Most likely, Darrell Colbert, Jr. will get the start. Colbert is a dual-threat quarterback and he transferred from SMU. Additionally, Lamar’s starting running back, Kendrick King, was moved to receiver. The top returning running back is Myles Wanza, who is just a sophomore. As far as the offensive line, the big story of the offseason was the fact that they bulked up from 284 to 312 (on average). That’s quite a bit of weight gain and you wonder how that will play out in Lubbock in the middle of the day. I mean, Lamar is in Beaumont so let’s not act like they aren’t used to the heat, but it’s a dry heat. And in case you were curious, Colbert was 12 of 15 for 179 yards and 3 touchdowns with an interception, while the leading rusher was Jordan Hoy, who had 101 yards on just 5 carries, but it was A.J. Walker who saw the bulk of the carries, 16 for 59 yards, and Derrion Randle had 11 carries for 44 yards.

3. That’s really informative, but I need to know about the defense. What do I need to know about the defense?

Fine. The best defensive lineman is Daniel Crosley, a defensive end, and I think they replaced both defensive tackles, so that’s going to be something to watch. The linebackers all return, led by Chaston Brooks, who was a turnover machine, forcing 4 fumbles and grabbing an interception, to go along with 78 tackles. Kevin O’Neill and Desmond Veals also return and they’re starters as well, so that’s probably their best group. This is going to be a blast from the past, but Willie Sykes is playing for Lamar, yes, the former Red Raider who was let go maybe sometime during the spring. The best secondary defender is probably Rodney Randle, Jr. Against Kentucky Christian, I think the defense had 11 different tackles for a loss, they did get behind the line of scrimmage.

4. Are you now concerned about Lamar since they demolished their week 1 opponent?

No.

5. How does Texas Tech regroup?

Well, I think that beating Lamar won’t be any sort of huge accomplishment and I’m not worried about that happening. There’s no line, so I think that 35 to 40 points is probably where the line will end up (if there is a line). I think and hope that the best thing that comes out of this game will be getting to see Jetty Duffey and figuring out if he is more or less polished than Bowman. Yes, I’m on the Jett Duffey train at this point.
