Leading Off

Just as a heads-up for the weekend, as you all know, I’m heading to Houston for the game and will be hanging out with Dan and Brian (and maybe others if we find a place to meet up). I’ve got the game day threads ready to go, whether it be tonight or over the weekends. Remember, if you see offensive comments, I can’t fix things immediately, probably because I’ll be drinking, but I’ll fix things when I can. Always remember that you can block folks using Disqus and flag the comment to help me help you and then I’ll make a decision about whether to ban or warn or whatever.

The inaugural Kirby Hocutt Show on Double T 97.3 with Robert Giovannetti was yesterday. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury and linebacker Dakota Allen were all on the show and Hocutt took questions as well.

The men’s team will add Franco Ribero and Francisco Vittar, doubles partners from Argentina, in January. I also wanted to point out that there used to be just one Twitter account shared by the two tennis teams and they decided to split them up, the Twitter account below is the new account, so if you haven’t given it a follow, go ahead and do so.

A-J Media’s Don Williams ponders if Texas Tech will permit alcohol sales at Jones AT&T Stadium, noting that UT only made $1.3 million from alcohol sales two years ago and I wonder if that’s enough revenue to actually make the move given that Texas Tech’s stadium is smaller. From my end, I’ve gotten used to not drinking during the game at the stadium and since I mainly go with my family, drinking is pretty low on my priority scale.

The Ringer has their preseason college football lettermen and your guy, linebacker Dakota Allen, makes the list:

Baumann: The only player in the history of Last Chance U to actually make an impact after leaving EMCC, Allen is in his second go-around at Texas Tech after he was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary in 2016. Allen matured during his year in Mississippi, was named a team captain in 2017, and returns as pretty much the platonic ideal of a college inside linebacker: He’s quick, tenacious, and a secure tackler. He’s not going to throw offensive linemen around or chase down receivers from behind, but he’s completely reliable.

RebelGrove’s Chase Parham writes about the success that Ole Miss offensive coordinator Phil Longo had against David Gibbs in David Gibbs’ first game as the defensive coordinator for Texas Tech. Sam Houston had 637 yards of total offense and lost 59-45.
