If you read or click on anything today, please click on this from A-J Media’s Gabriel Monte where he details the how and why Da’Leon Ward was arrested. The tldr version is that it is a case of mistaken identity and a warrant that was executed and shouldn’t have been. Here was the key bit for me (the Payne quoted here is Ward’s attorney, Tray Payne):
“The big questions I heard yesterday,” Payne said, “were, ‘How come the athletic department didn’t know?’ ‘How could he be practicing?’ Well, their information on July 2, 2018, from Texas Tech (Office of) Student Conduct was, ‘He’s cleared.’ And you’d think that if the student conduct office had cleared him that he would probably be cleared through the Texas Tech Police Department. The standards aren’t the same.”
Payne said he could understand why Ward was indicted, because there was some level of probable cause with the phones being in his possession at one point.
“I think the Office of Student Conduct did a really good job of investigating it,” Payne said. “They talked to him, evidently viewed the video, corroborated that it wasn’t him on the video and said, ‘Look, we believe you and don’t think you did anything wrong.’ But he had already been indicted.”
A-J Media’s Don Williams was at yesterday’s Red Raider Club kickoff luncheon, where Marcus Coleman, Byron Hanspard and Tracy Saul were the featured speakers and you can check that out.

Miscellaneous . . . SB Nation has two posts for you to check out: all 130 teams ranked (with Texas Tech 49th) and two sets of bowl predictions with Texas Tech making a bowl in both cases . . . Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher signed his contract yesterday guaranteeing him $75 million pretty much no matter what and was there any coincidence that he signed the day after the story broke about alleged NCAA violations . . . Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was suspended for 3 games, although I’m guessing he thinks he didn’t do anything wrong by not telling someone that his receivers coach was allegedly beating the victim (even though the victim texted Urban’s wife with photos). Meyer deleted text messages over a year old and this seems like this punishment is not enough for ignoring domestic abuse, but football is more important than . . .
