A-J Media’s Carlos Silva, Jr. writes about Oregon transfer Jayne Lydiatt:
The 5-foot-9 midfielder, who spent two years with Oregon in the Pac-12, felt like the level of intensity and competition was not to her liking. The everyday mantra of being put in an adverse setting and expected to persevere proved to be the deciding factor on why she chose to commit to Texas Tech.
In 2016 and 2017, Lydiatt recorded five goals and two assists in 36 matches — 24 of which she started.
“I’m grateful to be surrounded by girls who, at 6 a.m., have so much energy and are just so ready to go every day,” said Lydiatt, who was also interested in three other schools before choosing Texas Tech. “That was kind of the biggest thing to me. … Even though we have an early practice, people are still out there 30 minutes early. It makes you want to get better.”

San Angelo Standard-Times’ Paul Harris writes about Chris Beard returning to San Angelo today and speak at lunch at the Zentner’s Daughter Steakhouse as part of the Texas Tech Alumni and Red Raider Club luncheon.
Star-Telegram’s Mac Engel writes about Andre Emmett as he and Ice Cube’s Big3 come to Dallas at the American Airlines Center:
“I’ve been all over Europe. Played in South America. Puerto Rico. Had a playoff run in Mexico,” he said this week in a phone interview. “And Lebanon. China. Korea. The D-League. Call up to the NBA. Back overseas.”

A-J Media’s Don Williams writes that he believes that McLane Carter is in the lead as far as the quarterback position is concerned. Williams asked offensive coordinator Kevin Johns about what the coaches are looking for:
When asked after Thursday’s practice the characteristics the eventual starter will have, new offensive coordinator Kevin Johns said, “I would say that they can manage coach King’s offense. That doesn’t necessarily mean they need to do everything to win the game. But just manage the offense. Take care of the football. Get us in the right play. Move the offense down the field. Be smart on third down. Things like that.
“Just play smart. We don’t need anyone to necessarily win the game, but they can’t lose the game.”
Additional notes from Don: new transfer John Bonney was working in at safety this practice . . . OC Kevin Johns said that Ja’Deion High is in the lead to start at the Y-receiver position and Zach Austin is in the lead at the H-receiver spot, while De’Quan Bowman is playing H-receiver as well as the outside receiver spot at X-receiver . . . Madison Akamnonu looks to hold onto the left guard spot . . . Freshmen Myller Royals and Caden Leggett are fighting to the back-ups to T.J. Vasher . . .
AP’s Stephen Hawkins (not Hawkings) writes that head coach Kliff Kingsbury is not nervous about Texas Tech’s uncertainty at quarterback:
“Just because they’re young or inexperienced, to me you never know how they’re going to respond,” Kingsbury said. “I wouldn’t say nervous. I think excited to not really know who it is and be able to work with those guys and try to have one guy really step up.”
InsideTheRedRaiders’ Joe Yeager has notes from yesterday’s media availability with Kevin Johns and David Gibbs and there’s some defensive notes (I’ll let you click over for offensive notes): that Justus Parker needs to be more consistent and not disappear for a quarter . . . that Rice DT transfer Preston Gordon is playing multiple line spots . . . Lonzell Gilmore won’t play rush end . . . Nelson Mbanasor was at the first spot at defensive tackle as Broderick Washington had the day off . . .
The team went to Main Event and here’s some video. When I grow up, I want to be able to dance like Antoine Wesley.
Gotta keep the competitive juices flowing off the field, too. 🎳
