Top Unranked Team. NCAA’s Mike Lopresti ranks the top 20 teams that were unranked to start the season and coming in at #3 is Texas Tech:
It’s a veteran effort, with either five seniors or four plus a redshirt junior in the starting lineup. “I don’t want to take anything away from Arizona State or Kentucky,” Kansas’ Bill Self said after looking down the business end of Texas Tech, “but that could be the best team we’ve played this season.”
High Praise. Statesman’s Kevin Lyttle writes about the rise of Texas Tech and it is opposing coaches that are giving the Red Raiders that high praise:
“You had a coach taking over with a new system, and older players were a little bit jilted when Tubby (Smith) left right after making the NCAA Tournament,” said Kansas State coach Bruce Webe[r]. “It took a little time to adjust.”
Baylor coach Scott Drew saw the adjustment up close last week when his nationally ranked Bears were pummeled 77-53 by Tech.
“They returned a lot of experience and added some new impact players. It’s a deep and dangerous combination,” Drew said.
Notebook. A-J Media’s Carlos Silva, Jr. has a notebook from yesterday’s media availability, talking with Justin Gray’s hot start for the Kansas game, Norense Odiase improving his fitness, status of Zach Smith (no real update, just that the rehab is going in the right direction), and 10,000 of the 15,098 are sold for the Kansas State game.
