Lady Raider Basketball

Swoopes to Join Coaching Staff. Yesterday, it was reported that assistant head coach Melanie Balcomb resigned due to family reasons and now, A-J Media’s Don Williams was at the presser where head coach Candi Whitaker talked about how Sheryl Swoopes would move into an assistant coach position:

Asked how Balcomb’s duties will be redistributed, Lady Raiders coach Candi Whitaker said, “We have done scouting reports in kind of a unique way this year, so Sheryl has taken on coach Mel’s responsibility in scouting reports, which is primarily (opponents’) defense and how will we attack?

“Guard coach. Coach Swoopes will step into the guard coach position. Recruiting, she (Balcomb) wasn’t doing a ton of, but we are taking advantage of the opportunity to have coach Swoopes in a recruiting position. I think we have that opportunity to put her more in front of recruits than maybe we did with coach Mel.”

Texas Tech Basketball

Malik’s Minute.

Game on Friday. Two ranked teams. Should be a blast. I won’t be able to watch it because I don’t have FOX Sports College.

Miscellaneous. The Dagger’s Jeff Eisenberg ranks the conferences as the college basketball world heads into conference play and has the Big 12 as the best conference in the nation . . .

Texas Tech Football

Walk-On Punter Added. Both A-J Media’s Don Willams and RedRaiderSports’ Brandon Soliz report on a new preferred walk-on punter, Reed Bowman, whose father, Don Bowman, also punted for Texas Tech for a short period of time. Bowman averaged about 53 yards a punt as a freshman last year and was first team all-conference at Blinn College. This quote is from Don’s article:

“When I started at Blinn, my goal was to go to a power-five,” Bowman said. “That was my big goal was to make it to a power-five, and Texas Tech is a family school. I have aunts and uncles … My dad went there. It just felt right after I went on a visit and everything.”

Miscellaneous. Via College Football Talk, LSU is set to fire their offensive coordinator, Matt Canada. This really doesn’t have any sort of relation to Texas Tech other than I think it’s interesting. Orgeron made a big deal of hire a big-time OC in Canada and now he’s getting rid of him. I wonder how much this factored into Jonathan Giles deciding to go to LSU, the promise of a real-deal passing offense and now, most likely, Orgeron will hire Steve Ensminger, the current tight ends coach . . . Texas beat Missouri last night, 33-17, go Big 12 . . .
