Starting 5
1. KenPom has Savannah State as the 329th best team in the nation, 311th in AdjO and 337th in AdjD. Texas Tech is up to 16th in the nation overall, 38th in AdjO and 8th in AdjD.
2. This is going to have to be a very quick preview. Savannah State is a very bad team. There’s really no other way around it. Their starting lineup is based on who started the last game and McClanahan is clearly their best player.
3. The official site has the official preview and head coach Chris Beard is worried about tempo:
“Savannah State is going to try to force the tempo,” Beard said. “They want us to turn the ball over and want us to take quick shots. Defense starts with our offense. We have to play intelligent, and we have to play veteran March-type basketball on offense. We need to take good shots, move the ball and don’t bail out with quick shots. We have to build a defense once we get back that will guard the three-point line. We need a defense that is going to help each other, and a defense that will get a rebound.”
4. My biggest concern heading into this game is that this won’t be much of a warm-up heading into the Seton Hall game next week. I’d expect the bench to get significant minutes today for this game. The Seton Hall matchup will probably be the best non-conference game of the year and Texas Tech is playing in Madison Square Garden, which is a big deal.
5. A-J Media’s Carlos Silva, Jr. previews the game, so check it out.
