A-J Media’s Nicholas Talbot writes about back-up quarterback Colt Garrett, finally getting his chance to play for Texas Tech, his dream school:
”My family and I sat down at the end of my senior season and looked at all the offers on the table, but growing up a local kid and seeing coach King, Sonny Cumbie and Graham Harrell throw the ball around here I just knew I wanted to take my shot and have no regrets.”
Still chasing that childhood dream, Garrett took a preferred walk-on spot with the Red Raiders. And Saturday, even if he didn’t throw a pass or get to do it at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, he began to live it.
A-J Media’s Don Williams did a Q&A with all sorts of questions answered, from why the offensive line has been a work in progress to who Kirby Hocutt would hire if the bottom dropped out (Williams thinks that Hocutt would tab Jim Leavitt, the DC at Oregon), the status of Jett Duffey (just a sore arm), etc. Here’s an answer about how Kingsbury is fighting complacency within the team:
A: The best angle Kliff Kingsbury can work in that regard is he has enough competition at a lot of positions that guys who hit a lull lose playing time. Last week, Quan Shorts made his first start at wide receiver and Derrick Willies didn’t play much. Kolin Hill made his first start of the season at rush end and Tony Jones didn’t play much.
The Red Raiders have the depth to do that at quite a few positions, outside receiver, defensive end and defensive back especially.
So far, they’ve gotten good effort every week, and I think a lot of that is because all the new blood and competition on defense have set a tone.
