ESPN’s Jake Trotter has his week 1 Big 12 power rankings and Texas Tech checks in at #7, ahead of Kansas, Texas and Baylor:
7. Texas Tech (9): It was just one game, but QB Nic Shimonek was terrific in his first career start in place of Patrick Mahomes. In a 56-10 rout of Eastern Washington, Shimonek completed his first 14 passes and finished with 384 yards. An improved defense is obviously going to be key. But with others in the league already faltering, Tech has an opportunity to stake a place higher in the standings.
