Lady Raider Basketball
I had almost forgotten that the Lady Raiders have a transfer waiting in the wings in forward Tihana Stojsavljevic, who will be playing for the U20 team in her home country of Croatia. Stojsavljevic transferred from Maine and learning how to spell her name is going to take some time.
Texas Tech Baseball
Via the San Angelo Standard-Times, Brock Martin, brother to Texas Tech pitcher Davis Martin, will be joining the baseball team after hitting .491 with 7 home runs and 40 RBI. Martin also plays safety (no mention if he’ll try to play football too) where he had 94 tackles, 4 picks and 2 forced fumbles last year.
Texas Tech Football
College Football News’ Pete Fiutak has his preview of the Big 12, and to save you a click, he’s thinks that Texas Tech is the team that will disappoint in the Big 12:
Kliff Kingsbury will keep pushing that boulder up the mountain, and it’ll keep rolling back down. The defense might finally start to tackle a bit, but can the offense keep it all rolling with Patrick Mahomes now a Kansas City Chief? Probably not. At best, the Red Raiders will have to fight through the last few games to get bowl eligible.
You can also check out his All-Big 12 team and top 30 players and the only Texas Tech players listed are Clayton Hatfield at place kicker, Jordyn Brooks and Jonathan Giles . . . This of course is impossible because Giles is no longer on the team. Fuitak also previews Texas Tech and picks Giles as the offensive MVP and Brooks as the defensive MVP. Fuitak picks Broderick Washington as his key player to a successful season:
DT Broderick Washington, Soph. – With Breiden Fehoko transferring and Gary Moore gone, the Red Raiders not only need new bodies on the inside, but they need an upgrade. The 6-3, 295-pound Washington isn’t massive, but he’s a decent-sized young player who got in a little bit of starting time making 14 tackles with a sack. Versatile enough to be used on the nose or anywhere else on the inside, he needs to grow into the job and be a rock for a woeful run D.
I had missed these three articles from the LAJ from last week, which focus on the former footballers who were in town the week before: Pete Robertson is hoping Washington is his NFL home; Branden Jackson’s tryout led to a spot with the Oakland Raiders; and DeAndre Washington is learning from one of the best, Marshawn Lynch. I hope and wish continued success for each and every one of them.
Miscellaneous . . . CBS Sports’ Ben Kercheval is going through the Big 12 win totals win an over, under or push and takes the under for Texas Tech’s 4.5 wins . . . former Texas Tech commit Treveon Johnson committed to the Sooners over the weekend and it is likely that another former Texas Tech commit Jaylon Robinson will also commit to the Sooners . . .
