Garner is a big safety prospect, already weighting in at nearly 190 pounds and having the prototypical size that David Gibbs likes at over 6’0″ (Garner is actually 6’2″). Garner may be the very first player that hasn’t lied about his speed. For those of you alarmed about Garner’s listed 40-yard dash time of 4.88, he’s actually being truthful because a lot of times kids that age just aren’t that fast. But Garner’s already 6’2″, he’s a big kid so it shouldn’t be all that unexpected. I’d also add that Garner isn’t a finished product yet and that’s the difference between 4-star guys and guys like Garner. That is neither a good or a bad thing, ti’s just the way that it is and 4-star guys are more polished and finished products. Garner has something that the coaches think that they can build on, which is a big frame that can work in at safety or cornerback. I honestly see a lot of Desmon Smith in Garner.
Garner spoke with Red Raider Sports’ Maitland Rutledge about committing to Texas Tech:
“Yeah I talked with Coach (Karl) Scott yesterday. They discussed with me how they’ll help me play corner because I’m going to be playing corner there so Coach Scott has got to help me on my technique so I can get better so when I go there, I’ll be ready.”
“The best thing I can bring to the secondary is my size and length,” he added.
