The ESPN Big 12 Blog Bros have their way too early 2017 Big 12 power rankings and your Red Raiders are 9th:
9. Texas Tech Red Raiders: Quarterback Patrick Mahomes II amounted to a one-man show for Tech this past season. With Mahomes having declared for the draft, the Red Raiders won’t have him in 2017. That leaves Nic Shimonek in line to take over. In his only meaningful appearance, Shimonek was impressive, albeit in a game against Kansas. The team’s defensive outlook continues to look rather dire, though young linebacker Jordyn Brooks has promise. Getting 2015 second-leading tackler Dakota Allen back could help, too.
I almost never post these chat transcripts with the DMN, but there was this bit between Evan Grant, Barry Horn and Kevin Sherrington from the DMN concerning the situation where Baker Mayfield and Joe Mixon started motioning for the crowd to get louder when they chanted “he hits women” and here’s a bit from Sherrington:
When the Auburn fans were changing “he hits women” and Joe Mixon started motioning for the Auburn crowd – and Baker Mayfield was doing it, too. And let me say this, I was a champion for Baker Mayfield when he got screwed at Texas Tech. I wrote that and wished him well and hoped that he would do well at Oklahoma. And I have to say this, and some of my good friends in Lubbock have said this about Baker Mayfield, too. Boy, he’s not the most pleasant guy. For him to get involved in all that, too. I would like to think that Bob Stoops – if he knew what was going on – if these two guys are motioning for these chants, make it louder … that he would have taken them and ripped them a new one at halftime.
I”m not sure that this has gotten a ton of play, but it’s interesting to see how some of the shine might be coming off of Mayfield a bit.
