We’ll have a preview later today as Texas Tech tips off their season against Houston Baptist at 6:30 tonight. LAJ’s Krista Pirtle writes about how Shadell Millinghaus hopes to provide a spark for the team and here’s head coach Chris Beard on Millinghaus:
โHe is energy,โ Tech coach Chris Beard said. โHis energy on and off the court was big for us. Definitely that energy translates to him being a high intensity defender. Offensively he can do a lot with his talent.โ
LAJ’s Krista Pirtle also has some notes about the potential versatility of the lineups, how the motion offense is supposed to work and maybe most interesting to me is that of the forty different lineups that Beard used in the exhibition, only one of them consisted of three guards. Expect this team to be big so long as they aren’t injured.
A couple of quick-hit articles. Busting Brackets writes that Niem Stevenson is one of the top five JUCO’s this year, coming in at #4 and Today’s U’s Jon Rothstein thinks that Stevenson is one of the best transfers in the nation as well.
Football
Via ESPN, Mel Kiper Jr. has Patrick Mahomes as the #2 quarterback heading into the 2017 NFL draft. I know that there’s been some discussion about whether or not Mahomes would get drafted and I’ve mentioned that he has too many measurables not to get drafted and he’s not Tim Tebow, he can throw the ball, but he’s certainly in a funk right now. I think he should come back too as he’s an unfinished product, but I definitely think he’ll be drafted if he were to come out and if he has a first round grade, then much like Jace Amaro, you couldn’t blame him for leaving. Can’t take that chance with with an injury. Here’s what Kiper had to say about Mahomes:
Mahomes is the big mover here. He has an NFL body (6-3, 230) and an NFL arm. He’s going to take time to adjust to the NFL, though, and whichever team that picks him will have to be patient.
LAJ’s Don Williams has a notebooky sort of article, where he writes about a handful of things, including Davis Webb at Cal, Ted Watts, one of the Hall of Fame inductees last week, Wes Welker on inside receivers, Rika Levi arrested for allegedly murdering a man (for real), Bradley Marquez in LA and Kirby Hocutt with being the CFB chair.
Speaking of Bradley Marquez, he’s now a father!
Miscellaneous . . . it’s been a while since I’ve posted about Baylor, where there is a report out there that the NCAA won’t impose the type of penalties that Penn State received, but last night a report surfaced, via ESPN, that Baylor offensive coordinator Kendal Briles is being investigated by the NCAA for improper contact with a recruit, which is odd because Baylor has pretty much shut down recruiting . . . Land Grant Gauntlet’s Patrick Mayhorn has ten burning questions for week 11 . . . Football Study Hall’s Bill Connelly has this week’s S&P+ and F/+ picks and the numbers say to pick Oklahoma State, but both projections have Texas Tech with the points . . .
