Post Game Thoughts: Tech 27 – TCU 24

What defense was that!? The defense played surprisingly well for a road game. The defense came up with stops when it counted. Not perfect, but good enough. Didn’t give up the big play. Held when it meant the most. Gibbs may be coaching for his job, and his team certainly helped him out today.

Nonexistent Offense… Where were they today? Another uncharacteristic performance today in Fort Worth. Mahomes was off today. He was antsy in the pocket, dancing and escaping the pocket when he didn’t have to. He made some ill-advised throws, like the interception to start the game where he was rolling to his left, threw across his body into the middle of the field.

Kingsbury’s insistence to let Mahomes work things out was frustrating. Mahomes was obviously not able to make the throws he needed to. He was antsy in the pocket. I’m not sure if his shoulder recovery took a step back this week, or not, but Mahomes was left in the game when it was obvious it wasn’t working. Luckily, the rushing offense showed up just enough to tie the game late. Mahomes re-injuring his shoulder on the final play of overtime hurts. We’ll need to see how bad it is, but it might be time to let Shimonek take the reins for a bit.

1 Penalty. Tech wasn’t called for their first penalty until 5 minutes into the fourth quarter (the delay of game wasn’t accepted and not counted).

Turnovers. Tech finally forced a turnover with the Douglas Coleman interception in the end zone. The offense promptly went three and out and special teams and the punter dropped the snap and gave TCU an extremely short field. It felt great to see the defense get that monkey off their back, you just wish the offense was present enough to take advantage.
