Awkward. LAJ’s Don Williams writes that Kevin Curtis returning to Lubbock to coach on the other side, something he hasn’t had to do before:
“It’s going to be a different feeling,” Curtis said by phone Wednesday after practice. “Obviously, I’ve never experienced it on the other side. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to face a great offense that Kliff (Kingsbury) has. It’ll be fun. We’ll have our hands full.”
ESPN’s Mitch Sherman writes about QB Patrick Mahomes, more of less about how he became a quarterback and growing up, giving up baseball and lots of other stuff we’ve read during the offseason:
“I know it wasn’t an easy decision,” Cantrell said. “Baseball was his first love. But he’s going to do whatever he has to do to win.”
It starts, Mahomes said, with eliminating those ill-advised throws that resurfaced in the fourth quarter at Arizona State. Mahomes threw 15 interceptions last year. He’s always going to improvise on a few plays because of his athleticism, Cantrell said. But after Tech’s first loss this season, the QB is more intent than ever on making the smart play every time he touches the ball.
“It’s easier said than done, but I can learn from my mistakes,” Mahomes said. “Really, it’s just staying with my reads and progressions. It’s something I have to get better at every week. Whether we’re scoring or they’re scoring, I have to take what [the defense is] giving me.”

ESPN’s Jake Trotter has what to watch for in week 3 of the Big 12, including if the Texas Tech defense will show up:
On the night Mahomes threw for 540 yards and five touchdowns, the Red Raiders still fell at Arizona State, as the Tech defense gave up 68 points, including a whopping eight touchdowns to running back Kalen Ballage. Can the defense pick up the pieces against a solid Louisiana Tech offense? If not, it could signal a long season in Lubbock, even with the electric Mahomes behind center.
