Baseball
Texas Tech Falls to Florida State. I’ve updated the series thread with Texas Tech’s loss to Florida State, 10-1. I mention in the series thread that this team really isn’t built to be great in the mid-week series because the depth is stacked for the weekend. The offense is going to have to be stellar for Texas Tech to win today’s game.
Football
Notebooky. LAJ’s Don Williams has a notebook of items (I’ll have the same thing here shortly) with lots of items, but maybe the biggest item is that Justis Nelson is playing the nickel cornerback spot, which means that he is mainly playing against slot receivers like Cameron Batson.
Take Two. ESPN’s Jake Trotter and Max Olson debate who has the best quarterback situation in the Big 12 and Olson definitely takes Texas Tech, and it seems like Trotter could easily go with Texas Tech, but went with OU. Here’s a bit from Olson:
So, yeah, I’m going out on a limb here and picking Texas Tech’s quarterback situation, even if most Big 12 fans have never heard of Mahomes’ backups. We don’t really know what they have in Nic Shimonek, Jett Duffey and Payne Sullins, but I’m a believer in Duffey and enrolling early has helped him bulk up nicely. Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury needs to get one of those guys ready to go.
But I’m still going with Tech. Maybe that looks dumb, but I expect Mahomes to establish himself as one of the nation’s best and most productive quarterbacks as a junior. He’s already pretty close, and he’s about to get even better.
Martin at Houston Elite 11. RRS’s Matt Clare has a recap of 2017 Texas Tech commit QB Xavier Martin and his day in Houston at the Elite 11 competition:
“I thought the Elite 11 competition was great,” Martin said. “I feel like I did really good and felt that I showed I can compete with the best in the state even though people have me labeled as an athlete. I’m strictly a quarterback.”
The day started with combine testing and Martin ran a laser-timed 4.43 second 40-yard dash, finishing in the Top 4 times out of hundreds at the camp and qualifying for the fastest man competition.
There’s more there, including some video of Martin making some throws in the competition.
