Last Thursday evening, I made it to Alamo Drafthouse to see The Revenant. I took my seat in the middle of the back row of the theater in time to watch all of the pre-movie programming which, essentially, was mostly Guy on a Buffalo videos. This would be the last light-hearted moment I would experience for the next 150 minutes.
A gentlemen about my age carefully escorted his grandmother to their seats on the back row a seat away from me before the movie began. After we had been through frozen hell together via scalpings, maulings, snotty/bloody beards, and various forms of frontier justice, the credits rolled and the lights came on. The lovely lady a seat away leaned over and asked me if I liked the movie. I said no, and we both laughed.
She said, “I’m the only old lady in here thinking that I was here to see a western.”
“I was hoping for the same thing, ” I replied. Instead, it was just over two hours of tortuous cinema. There are several things going through your head throughout the ordeal:
Who will survive? These guys are ice cold. I’m exhausted. What was the point of that shot? Can’t we speed things up a bit? Why did I put myself through this? He might pull this off! My heart hurts.
In short, it’s a bit like watching a TTU basketball game.
