Sports Performance Center Video. Not sure why this was released, but it was released last night and it’s a bit longer than what I think we’ve seen before with the new sports performance center. It’s going to be ridiculously nice.
Lady Raiders Basketball
Lady Raiders Notch First Conference Win. I was unsure it wasn’t going to happen, but the Lady Raiders get their first conference win with a 69-66 win over Iowa State in overtime. Here is the official site recap and box score. Ivonne CookTaylor led the way with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Japreece Dean had 10 points and 6 assists to just 1 turnover on the day. LAJ’s Nicholas Talbot recaps the game:
“It was a huge win for us obviously — a huge monkey off our back, getting a win in the Big 12,” Texas Tech coach Candi Whitaker said. “I am just proud that we won, but we played well. I thought we were really locked in defensively and guarded tough,” Whitaker said. “We had a lot of people playing a lot of minutes and I thought they had a lot of grit down the stretch.”
Men’s Basketball
TCU Struggling with Depth. FWST’s Carlos Mendez writes that TCU is struggling with depth this year as they are down to a nine man rotation:
But a short roster is nothing new for coach Trent Johnson at TCU. Injuries have cost him significant playing time from some of his top players, such as Amric Fields two years ago. Last year, Devonta Abron spent much of the year recovering from injury. This year, Kenrich Williams is out for the season recovering from knee surgery. Chris Washburn missed the first 11 games with a hand injury.
“Seems like it’s been like that for 2 1/2, three years,” Johnson said last week. “Everybody deals with it in college basketball and college sports.”
Preview. LAJ’s Krista Pirtle has a preview of tonight’s game and notes TCU’s strong frontcourt:
Texas Tech outrebounded Baylor by one but was outscored in the paint by six points. Play inside is key against a TCU team that looks to get the ball in the paint with Karviar Shepherd and Vlad Brodziansky. Shepherd needs only three more rebounds to total 500 boards for his three-year career. TCU is a perfect 8-0 this season when out-rebounding its opponent. TCU out-rebounded Texas in its last home outing, 40-31. TCU has either tied or outscored its opponent down low in all but seven games. After struggling with 0-for-3 shooting from the floor for no points against Baylor, Red Raider sophomore Norense Odiase looks to get back on track in Fort Worth.

Howard to Walk-On at Texas Tech. North Texas defensive end Eli Howard is to transfer to Texas Tech and walk-on for the Red Raiders.
CONFIRMED: North Texas defensive end Eli Howard transferring to Texas Tech. Howard went to San Angelo Central High School. #GunsUp

You can check out Howard’s bio at UNT here, but I believed he redshirted, so there are no stats. Howard was also the 3-6A defensive MVP in San Angelo his senior season. I think I remember Howard having a preferred walk-on option at Texas Tech, but I can’t remember, his name definitely sounds familiar and I think I’ve watched his highlight video before. Oh, and the other thought here is that new defensive line coach Kevin Patrick was the defensive line coach at North Texas, so Howard is essentially following Patrick to Texas Tech.
Here is Howard’s senior highlights:
Vinson Offered as Preferred Walk-On. Via RP’s Alyssa Chrisope writes that Lubbock Cooper defensive end Kirby Vinson (6-2/240) has been offered a preferred walk-on spot for Texas Tech. Vinson has the option of playing at the JUCO level and then maybe receiving a full-on scholarship. You can check out his senior highlights here:
Garrett Offered Preferred Walk-On. Roosevelt quarterback and free safety Colt Garrett (6-2/185) has been offered a preferred walk-on spot with Texas Tech.
South Plains football news: Roosevelt QB/DB Colt Garrett with a preferred walk-on spot at Texas Tech. Also an offer from Wayland Baptist.
