Baseball
Baseball Loses to Baylor. Womp. Womp. The season, most likely, is over, as Texas Tech lost to Baylor, 5-4 (recap and box score). Dylan Dusek got the start, but he only lasted 2.2 innings, giving up 5 hits and 3 runs, while Matt Withrow pitched the next 4.0 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs. That was 1 run too much as the offense was too stagnant, leaving a man on base in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th (2), 8th and 9th innings. tyler Neslony was 2-5 with 2 RBI and Tanner Gardner was 1-4, including a home run. This is most likely the end for this team. Thank you to the seniors, who helped take this team to new heights last year going to the College World Series.
Tennis
Soares and Dojas Advance to Sweet 16. Well, we’ve got some cool stuff going on here as Felipe Soares and Hugo Dojas defeated Kyle Koch and Thiago Pinheiro of South Carolina to advance to the Sweet 16 and now they have All-American honors.
Track and Field
Speight Named Academic All-District. Congrats to Montene Speight as she has been named to the District 7 Capital One Academic All-District Team! Speight runs the 400m and has the 21st best time in the nation.
Women’s Golf
Play Suspended. Not such a good round, at least as far as I can tell, as play was suspended and I think the ladies are between 15 and 18 and are tied for 23rd at 26 over and that’s second to last. there’s lots of time to play, but they’re 23 strokes behind Stanford who sits at 3 over.
Basketball
Cool Story About Darryl Dora’s Wife. So, this was neat as Gonzalez native, Liza Dora, wife of Texas Tech basketballer Darryl Dora, wrote a children’s book and is doing a book signing in her and Darryl’s hometown of Gonzalez. the other neat thing is that she’s started a site called Curisome that is open to women writers who need an outlet.
Admin
Giovannetti Named Senior Associate AD. Congrats to Robert Giovannetti, who was named the Senior Associate Athletic Director for external operations and strategic communications. Here is the description of the job and Kirby Hocutt:
Giovannetti, the television play-by-play voice for Texas Tech TV broadcasts, will assume his new position on June 1 where he will have direct oversight over several of the department’s external units, including athletics communications, sports broadcasting, promotions and fan engagement, ticket sales and ticket operations.
“I am very pleased to be able to welcome Robert Giovannetti to the Texas Tech athletics department family,” Hocutt said. “Robert brings the exact skill set, background and leadership that we need in this important position. I am excited for the direction he will take our external operations.”
