The Lady Raiders (15-15, 5-13) had another loss on Monday against the Baylor Bears. Tech did make it exciting in the end and pushed to get the win but fell short. The Lady Raiders were down by as much as 27 points and went all out to get a 16-1 run in the later part of the 2nd half. Tech got to within 5 points (71 to 62) with 42 seconds left in the game but was forced to foul the Bears to stop the clock. Final Score Tech 65, Baylor 75. Amber Battle had another outstanding game and scored 23 points. Battle has been a player to be reckoned with and she was rewarded by being picked for the All-Big12 First Team.
The “2015 Phillips 66 Big12 Women’s Basketball Championship” Tournament starts tonight and the Lady Raiders have been placed in the bracket against West Virginia (17-12, 7-10 Big12). Can Tech beat the Mountaineers three times this season? I am very much hoping that we have their number and get the win. The Lady Raiders beat West Virginia in Morgantown on January 14th by 10 points (55-45) and then when the Mountaineers came to Lubbock, Tech won by 16 points (73-57). The game tonight will be the 7th meeting with the Lady Raiders leading the series 4-2. The winner of this game advance to play against Oklahoma.
West Virginia is currently 4th in the Big12 in Field Goal % Defense with an average of37.9%. The Mountaineers are struggling at the free-throw line with only 62.5% FT%. WVU is also not very strong on the outside and is in 10th place in the Big 12 rankings in 3-Pt FG %. The Mountaineers are extremely strong on the boards and are in 1st place in the Big12 in Blocked Shots and Offensive Rebounds. The Junior Guard # 23 Bria Holmes is the leader for the Mountaineers. Holmes averages 19.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 2 Steals/game. Her teammate, Senior Forward # 5 Averee Fields averages 13.2 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 79.8% FT % and makes over 60% of her shots beyond the arc. Senior Guard # 22 Linda Stepney averages 6.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg and 5.7 apg. Freshman Forward Teana Muldrow averages 7 ppg and 4.4 rpgs and Sophomore Center # 15 Lanay Montgomery who is 6′ 5″ averages 4.3 ppg and 7.2 rpg. I have hope that the Lady Raiders have can remain calm but be aggressive and play a solid game tonight and beat the Mountaineers.
The Starters for today’s game are: Sophomore Guard #2 Ivonne CookTaylor is averaging 8.7 ppg and 4.3 rpg. Junior Guard #11 Rayven Brooks had 7.6 points and 3.4 rebounds and is currently ranked 12th and 11th respectively in the Big12 standings for Blocked Shots and Steals with 25 blocks and 45 Steals this season. Junior Forward #35 Jamie Roe averages 3.6 ppg and 3.4 rebounds. Senior Guard #12 Amber Battle who averages 15.8 ppg and 5.6 rebounds and is 77% accurate from the free-throw line. Battle is currently 4th in the Big 12 in scoring, 5th in FT percentage and in Defensive Rebounds (4.67 rpg).
